1. DOUGH-SPINNING IS AN ART FORM.
Think spinning pizza dough sounds simple? Think again. Dough-spinning has its own professional-level sporting event where pizza teams compete in acrobatic dough-spinning competitions at the World Pizza Championships.
2. PIZZA WAS INVENTED IN NAPLES IN THE 1800S
Created as a way to feed the poor and hungry masses, this now world-famous dish came from very humble beginnings. Pizzas were sold cheaply on the streets and eaten by hand, a form of dining dubbed ‘disgusting’ by wealthy (and probably jealous) Neapolitans.
3. MARGHERITA WAS THE FIRST EVER PIZZA FLAVOUR
In 1889 Queen Margherita visited Naples with her husband King Umberto. The pair grew tired of their diet, which consisted exclusively of French haute cuisine, and wished to try a local dish. The pizza delivered to them was topped with white cheese, basil and tomatoes, the colours of the Italian flag. It was dubbed the Margherita.
4. IN 2001, A PIZZA GOT DELIVERED INTO SPACE
Yuri Usachov, a Russian astronaut living on the International Space Station, was the recipient of the first ever avionic fast food delivery. He had to wait a while though, it took nearly a year to develop and supply the specialty pie. The astro-pizza featured normal ingredients like cheese, tomato sauce, a salami topping along with a crispy crust.
